Located 17 km from Kolhapur city, Kasaba Beed is accessible by ST buses and private vehicles. The temple’s high base and steps make for an easy visit

Major events like Maha Shivratri, Vijayadashami (Dasara), and Datta Jayanti see the temple filled with devotees for week-long rituals and mass celebrations. October to March is best for quiet exploration and favorable weather. Don’t miss Kiranotsav, when twice yearly (2–10 April and 17–23 September) the first rays of sunlight illuminate the Shivling—a phenomenon similar to Kolhapur’s Mahalaxmi Temple

About the place ...

The Mahadev Temple, built in Hemadpanti style, retains its stone grandeur even after restoration. Raised on a high plinth, the temple is accessed by eight steps and boasts 18 intricately carved pillars. The east-facing assembly hall (Sabhamandap), vestibule (antaral), and sanctum (garbhagriha) lead pilgrims through a progression of sacred space.

A majestic lamp tower (Deepmala) stands atop a stone platform to the south, thoughtfully placed to preserve uninterrupted views during Kiranotsav. The temple’s architectural highlights include pillars with square bases, octagonal shafts, and circular capitals. Ancient Ganesh idols reside in wall niches, a brass-horned Nandi watches over the sanctum, and a stone tortoise symbolizes Vishnu.

Within the marble-tiled sanctum, visitors find a silver-plated shalunka holding a revered black Shivling, crowned by a Ganesh carving, with a black panel of Shiva-Parvati and five brass masks below. The vestibule also houses fragments of Veergals (hero stones), including rare depictions of women warriors.

Kasaba Beed’s folklore is rich with tales of unearthed gold coins bearing Shilahara tridents, Shivlings, elephants, and ancient Kannada inscriptions. These treasures, believed to originate from royal festivals or wartime, underscore the area’s “gold-rain” mythos.

A standout feature is the Veergal Museum, displaying hundreds of hero and sati stones, offering a window into medieval Kolhapur’s martial and cultural history. The carvings of battle scenes, ascensions, and divine worship attract researchers and art historians
