Shikaran

Shikaran is one of Maharashtra’s simplest and most beloved sweet treats, providing comfort and nourishment with minimal fuss. The dish is made by marrying ripe, mashed bananas with milk, sugar and a touch of cardamom or nutmeg. Sometimes, jaggery is used instead of sugar and shikaran is topped with chopped nuts or a dollop of ghee for extra richness. Served chilled or at room temperature, Shikaran is enjoyed as a dessert, breakfast, or post-meal palate cleanser.

Culturally, Shikaran holds a place of honor in both rural and urban Maharashtrian homes. It is a staple for fasting days, a reliable lunchbox treat, and a favorite during the hot season, thanks to its cooling, easy-to-digest nature. For many families, Shikaran evokes memories of childhood and grandmother’s kitchen—its taste gentle, soothing, and always made with affection. It is also found at traditional Maharashtrian feasts, often paired with fluffy hot puris.

Demographically, Shikaran is appreciated by elders for its digestibility, by children for its sweetness, and by busy families for its convenience and healthfulness. For travelers, Shikaran is an invitation into the everyday life of Maharashtra: humble, delightful, and filled with the essence of home
