About Someshwar Temple, Hottal

Someshwar Temple is another important part of Hottal’s historic temple landscape. The site is associated with the Chalukyan period, and independent documentation describes the surviving structure as having a mandapa and three sanctum spaces. The central sanctum currently contains a Shiva lingam, while the other two sanctums do not presently contain their original images.

The original article identifies the temple with the name “Tripurusha” and explains this as a shrine associated with Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It further suggests that the three sanctum spaces corresponded to these three deities.

Specialty to Observe

The surviving architectural remains of Someshwar Temple are especially interesting for the arrangement of its three sanctum spaces. The present central sanctum contains a Shiva lingam, while the two side sanctums are currently without their original images. The surviving pillars display geometric forms, and sculptures on the temple’s exterior include representations of Surya, Vishnu and Narasimha.
The temple is also an archaeological site in an ongoing story of discovery and conservation. Archaeological work at Hottal has revealed previously buried temple remains, including a temple base, sculptures and other architectural material, demonstrating that the site’s surviving monuments represent only part of its historic remains.

Importance in Terms of Tourism and Study

Someshwar Temple is particularly relevant to the study of historic temple planning and sculptural traditions. Its three-sanctum arrangement, surviving carved pillars and exterior sculptures provide material for understanding the architectural vocabulary of the Hottal temple landscape.

For visitors, the temple offers a different experience from the more substantially preserved Siddheshwar shrine. Its partially ruined state makes the surviving architectural elements especially important to observe, while ongoing archaeological interest adds to its value as a heritage and study destination.
