About the place ...

Yakutbaba Dargah, located atop the scenic Utambar Hill near Kelshi in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, is one of the most significant Muslim pilgrimage sites in the Konkan region. This historic shrine, also known as Hazrat Yakub Baba Sarwari Rehmatullah Dargah, dates back over 386 years and is deeply revered by devotees of all faiths.

According to local legends, Yakutbaba arrived from Hyderabad in Sindh in the year 1618, travelling by boat to Bankot port along with a young companion named Solis Khan. Stories say that when a local boatman refused to ferry them across the river, another kind-hearted man paid their fare — and later experienced great prosperity. Such tales add to the spiritual aura surrounding the Dargah.

The shrine also has a connection to the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is believed that during his campaign in Dabhol around 1666, Shivaji Maharaj met Yakutbaba, sought his guidance, and granted 653 acres of land around the Dargah. While some accounts even call Yakutbaba the spiritual guru of Shivaji Maharaj — a claim not supported by historical records — the mention of Yakutbaba appears in the 98 Kalami Bakhar, adding to the intrigue of his legacy.

Architecturally, the Dargah is a simple yet elegant stone structure, reflecting the understated beauty of traditional Konkan craftsmanship. Its hilltop location offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Arabian Sea, making it both a spiritual and scenic retreat. The peaceful surroundings enhance the experience, drawing visitors seeking blessings and tranquility.

Every year on 6th December, the Dargah hosts a vibrant Urus festival, attracting not only Muslim devotees but also Hindus and people of other faiths. The atmosphere during this event is filled with devotion, music, and a sense of communal harmony.

Tourists visiting Kelshi can also explore nearby attractions such as Shri Mahalaxmi Temple, the Sandy Hill (Valuchi Tekdi), the serene Bharja River, Siddhivinayak Temple, and the Beleswar Temple at Utambar. For nature lovers, the Dargah’s location is perfect for combining spiritual visits with the natural beauty of the Konkan coastline.

Whether you are drawn by faith, history, or the charm of the Konkan, Yakutbaba Dargah offers a memorable blend of spirituality, culture, and stunning seaside vistas.

Best time to visit: November to February, when the weather is pleasant and the Urus festival adds a vibrant touch to the atmosphere.
