Shri Dev Eknath Temple in Harnai is a sacred destination with a fascinating history that draws devotees and visitors alike. Centuries ago, a devout Nath follower named Late Shri Gailad lived in Harnai. One night, Shri Eknath Maharaj appeared to him in a dream and asked him to come to Pandharpur and bring him to Harnai.

Obeying the vision, Shri Gailad travelled to Pandharpur. However, upon experiencing the divine presence of Lord Pandurang there, he became deeply immersed in devotion and forgot the earlier command. Soon, Shri Eknath Maharaj appeared to him again in a dream, reminding him of the task and guiding him to the exact location of his sacred footwear (padukas). Shri Gailad then went to the river Chandrabhaga, collected the padukas, and returned to Harnai. The villagers celebrated the arrival of this blessing with great joy and established the padukas in a small thatched hut.

From that day, the shrine became a place of daily worship, aarti, discourses, and devotional gatherings. Around the same time, devotees in Paithan also received visions that Shri Eknath Maharaj had taken residence in Harnai, leading them to travel there for darshan. This event took place about 220 years ago, and since then, Harnai has celebrated Shri Eknath Maharaj’s festival much like Paithan, especially on Phalgun Vadya Shashti, the date associated with his birth and samadhi.

During this period, Suvarnadurg Fort was under the rule of the Angre family. Hearing about the padukas, the Sardars themselves came for darshan and, overjoyed, decided to construct the present stone temple in place of the humble hut. They even provided an annual grant for the temple’s upkeep.

The Shri Dev Eknath Temple is a fine example of typical Konkani temple architecture. Built mainly in wood, it has a sloping roof covered with traditional earthen tiles, keeping the interior cool. The temple’s surroundings are kept neat and clean, with stone-tiled flooring adding to its charm. The spacious main hall is supported by sturdy wooden beams and columns, while the sanctum sanctorum is beautifully enclosed with a decorative wooden mesh structure, creating an intimate and serene atmosphere for worship.

Visitors to Harnai can experience not only the temple’s divine aura but also the rich history, architecture, and deep-rooted traditions that it preserves. The Shri Dev Eknath Temple stands as a testimony to faith, community devotion, and the enduring cultural heritage of coastal Maharashtra.
