About the place ...

Nestled in the scenic coastal village of Kelshi in Ratnagiri district, the Mahalaxmi Mandir is one of the most revered temples of Konkan. Dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, this temple has been a center of faith, culture, and tradition for centuries. Surrounded by lush greenery, coconut groves, and the soothing sounds of the Arabian Sea nearby, the temple offers devotees a peaceful spiritual retreat.

The temple is believed to have been constructed in the 18th century during the Peshwa era. According to local legends, the goddess appeared in the dream of a pious devotee named Yamnabai Ovlekar, inspiring her to build the temple. Another fascinating story speaks of a farmer who discovered the swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Mahalakshmi while ploughing his land. The idol was enshrined here, and later, a noble Brahmin named Lakshmana Lago built the temple in its current beautiful form. This deep-rooted history makes the temple a living testimony of divine presence and local devotion.

The architecture of Mahalaxmi Mandir reflects the grandeur of Maratha craftsmanship. Built on a wide stone base, the temple has two distinctive domes, one of which is rounded and unique, while the inner sanctum dome stands tall and straight. The sanctum houses the stunning black stone idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi, adorned with gold and silver ornaments. Alongside the goddess, a Shivling is also worshipped in the garbhagriha. The temple has three grand entrances, a spacious courtyard, and a beautiful pond at the back, where lotus flowers bloom, adding charm to the surroundings.

Religious significance here is immense. Devotees believe the goddess presides over the entire taluka, protecting her people and fulfilling their wishes. Festivals such as Navratri, Diwali, and Ganesh Chaturthi are celebrated with grandeur, but the highlight remains the annual Rath Yatra and the grand Chaitra fair, which attracts thousands of devotees. During these events, the temple comes alive with processions, rituals, and cultural traditions passed down for generations.

Today, the temple is managed by a trust established in 1960, but the faith of villagers remains as strong as ever. A visit to Mahalaxmi Mandir, Kelshi is not only a spiritual journey but also a glimpse into the cultural soul of Konkan.
