About the place ...

Vijaydurg Fort, located in Devgad Taluka, is one of the most formidable and historically significant sea forts on the Konkan coast. Often referred to as the “Eastern Gibraltar of India”, this 17-acre fort juts out into the Arabian Sea and showcases the military brilliance of the Maratha Empire, especially under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Originally built by the Shilahar dynasty and later captured and expanded by Shivaji Maharaj in 1653, Vijaydurg was transformed into an impregnable sea fortress. Its triple-layered walls, deep moat, and strategic sea-facing location made it a critical defense point in the Maratha naval chain. The fort’s location allowed for surveillance over the sea for miles, helping control maritime trade routes.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Vijaydurg is its underwater defense system—a submerged wall built in the sea to trap enemy ships, believed to be the only such structure of its kind in India. Inside the fort, visitors can explore ancient bastions, hidden escape routes, granaries, and water tanks that still hold fresh water. The massive cannon mounts and the intricate design of the fort show the strategic planning involved in its construction.

Surrounded by the sea on three sides, Vijaydurg offers panoramic views and is a photographer’s delight. The tranquility of the surrounding waters combined with the imposing ruins evokes a powerful sense of history.

Local guides provide rich storytelling that brings the fort’s legacy alive, including its battles with the British and the Portuguese. Nearby, you can explore Devgad Beach, Rameshwar Temple, and Kunkeshwar Temple, completing a fulfilling cultural circuit.
