About the place ...

The Kankaditya Temple, located in the peaceful village of Kasheli in Rajapur Taluka, is a rare and revered temple dedicated to Lord Aditya (Surya) – the Sun God. This temple is among the very few in India that are exclusively devoted to Surya, making it a unique spiritual and cultural landmark in the Konkan region of Maharashtra.

The name ‘Kankaditya’ is derived from “Kank” meaning stones and “Aditya” meaning Sun God. According to legend, the idol of Lord Surya was found in a nearby riverbed and later enshrined in the current location. The temple is over 800 years old and holds a special place in the hearts of local devotees, especially during the Rath Utsav (chariot festival) and Rath Saptami, when thousands gather to offer prayers and witness the grand procession of the deity.

The temple architecture is simple yet powerful, featuring traditional Konkan-style wooden structures with tiled roofing and beautiful stone idols. The black stone idol of Lord Aditya is depicted with a seven-horse chariot, symbolizing the seven days of the week and seven rays of sunlight. The temple faces east to welcome the morning sun, creating a magnificent spectacle at sunrise when sunlight falls directly on the idol — a truly divine experience.

Set amidst coconut groves, paddy fields, and hills, the temple’s serene surroundings offer visitors a tranquil retreat for spiritual reflection and nature walks. The village atmosphere, hospitality of locals, and untouched natural beauty make it an ideal destination for those seeking offbeat cultural tourism in Ratnagiri.

Nearby attractions include Adivare Ganapati Temple, Pawas, and the pristine Rajapur beaches, making it easy to include the Kankaditya Temple in a broader travel itinerary.
