About the place ...

Mahakali Mandir, located in Adivare village of Rajapur taluka in Ratnagiri district, is one of the most revered temples in Konkan. The temple holds immense religious and historical significance and is a fine example of traditional Konkan temple architecture. According to local traditions, the idol of Goddess Mahakali was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 14th century. The temple is part of a larger sacred complex known as Mahakali Panchayatana, which also includes shrines dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, Goddess Mahasaraswati, Yogeshwari, Nagareshwar, and Ravalnath. Devotees follow the age-old custom of first visiting the surrounding temples before taking darshan of Mahakali and Mahasaraswati.

The main sanctum of the temple houses three shrines facing west. The central shrine is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, flanked by Goddess Mahakali and Goddess Mahasaraswati. The idols are artistically crafted in black stone, with Mahalakshmi’s idol being around 3 feet tall. The sanctum also features a beautifully carved Shri Yantra on the wall. A unique architectural feature of this temple is that once a year, during a specific time, the setting sun’s rays directly illuminate the face of Goddess Mahalakshmi for three consecutive days, creating a divine spectacle for devotees.

The temple’s structure reflects typical Maratha and Konkan styles, with a west-facing Mahadwara, wooden Garuda Mandap, and stone-pillared mandaps. The ceiling, beams, and wooden supports inside the mandap are intricately carved with floral motifs, mythological figures, and geometric designs, showcasing the fine craftsmanship of Konkan artisans. These wooden carvings not only add artistic beauty but also narrate stories of devotion and spirituality, making the temple a cultural treasure.

The temple complex also includes several subsidiary shrines dedicated to deities such as Surya, Mahishasuramardini, Vitthal-Rakhmai, Tulja Bhavani, and Navagrahas. Some of these idols date back to the 11th century, while others were added during the later Maratha period. The temple tank, Manikarnika Kund, adds to the sanctity of the site. Historical references suggest that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Kanhoji Angre, and Samarth Ramdas Swami had visited this temple, underlining its historic importance.

Festivals such as Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali are celebrated with great devotion here. Every Friday and on full moon days, the festival idol of the goddess is taken out in procession, attracting devotees from far and wide. With its rich history, artistic architecture, and deep spiritual aura, Mahakali Mandir at Adivare continues to be a beacon of faith and tradition in Konkan.
