Huggi

Huggi, known as khapli gavhachi kheer in Marathwada, is a sumptuous and ancient dessert made from emmer wheat (khapli), slow-cooked with milk, ghee, jaggery or sugar, and flavored with cardamom. Sometimes, dried fruits like cashews and raisins are added for extra indulgence. Emmer wheat is prized for its nutritional value, making Huggi both wholesome and celebratory.

The dish is central to religious and familial celebrations—served on birthdays, harvests, and auspicious days. Its preparation is slow and loving, with wheat boiled for hours to achieve creamy richness. Culturally, Huggi recalls rural abundance and tradition, with families gathering to cook and share stories around the kitchen.

Emotionally, it brings comfort and nostalgia—a recipe handed down generations, always signifying love and togetherness. Demographically, Huggi is enjoyed by all, from children to elders, and especially cherished in Marathwada and parts of Vidarbha.

For travelers, Huggi offers a rare, delicious connection to ancient grains and rural hospitality. Each spoonful is a reminder of simpler times and the enduring warmth of community food
