About the place ...
Sangameshwar Temple, Saswad, is a celebrated heritage and spiritual landmark set at the confluence of the Karha and Chambli (Bhogavati) rivers. With roots tracing back to the 7th–13th century, it exemplifies Hemadpanthi architecture and stands as one of the oldest and most beautiful Shiva shrines in Maharashtra. According to legend, the temple’s origin is linked to the Pandavas’ exile and the flowing of holy waters; many Shiva temples along the Karha are said to have been established during these mythic events
The temple is surrounded by gracefully ornamented stone walls, approached via a short walk from Saswad bus stand, and has a large stone courtyard typical of the Yadava period but also showing Peshwa-era renovations. The main shrine includes a Nandimandap housing a striking six-foot black stone Nandi, which dexterously faces north (a rare architectural feature), adorned with carved bells and drapery. Twin stone deepmalas light up the approach and are central to the Tripurari Purnima festival, when countless lamps shine at the rivers’ meeting
Sabhamandap pillars, lotus motifs, and a turtle carved on the floor symbolize temple stability and prosperity. The east-facing sanctum is entered through a door with intricate leaves and motifs and holds a monolithic black Shiva linga continuously bathed in water. Behind the linga is a Ganesh idol, and the shikhara above the sanctum is adorned with hundreds of layers of mythical and divine figures. Hemadpanthi (black stone, lime, tenon joints) and Maratha styles blend, with ghats leading to the riversides and occasional smaller shrines lining the walkways.
Sangameshwar is a “jagrut devsthan”—a living temple—said to grant every vow. It’s a favorite for darshan seekers and documentary filmmakers, with lush gardens and river scenery drawing families and explorers alike. Tripurari Purnima, Mahashivratri, and Shravan Mondays are peak times for worship and fairs, while steady streams of pilgrims visit year-round
