About the place ...

Overlooking the scenic Karha River in Saswad, the Changavateshwar Temple is a heritage treasure and major pilgrimage site built in the 13th century. Constructed in the robust Hemadpanthi style, the temple’s legend links it to Saint Changdev Maharaj, the legendary yogi whose devotion led to the manifestation of the self‑formed (“svayambhu”) Shiva lingam here. The tranquil temple grounds—elevated 50 feet above the river—are surrounded by lush gardens and stone fort walls, with inner verandas echoing with birdsong, and have been a popular filming location for Marathi movies due to their picturesque setting

The approach greets devotees with twin carved stone lamp towers (Deepmalas), especially grand during Diwali and Maha Shivratri. The mandapa (assembly hall) is flanked by 30 pillars—circular and square—with carvings reflecting human emotions, daily life, wrestlers, dancers, and a menagerie of animals such as horses, elephants, mythical Sharabha, rhinos, monkeys, peacocks, and celestial beings. Fine floral and gemstone motifs decorate the pillars; Indo-Islamic influence is evident in some bases and door frames. A stone Nandi is placed at the entrance, facing the sanctum that houses the historic Shiva lingam and a Ganesh idol

Renovated by Sardar Ambaji Purandare in the 18th century, the temple preserves its original Yadava-era setting and Maratha-period artistry. The sanctum also holds a brass bell and is adorned with panels telling stories of devotion, folklore, and mythological scenes. A carved tulsi stand, rare for temples of this era, stands near the entrance, symbolizing sanctity and continuity of tradition

Every Maha Shivratri, Changavateshwar comes alive with a vibrant festival, Rudrabhishek rituals, devotional music, and evening aarti. Monday evenings offer ongoing religious programs and the temple’s location attracts pilgrims and cultural tourists year-round
