Mahadev Temple, Anwa

Set amidst the tranquil rural landscape of Anwa village in Maharashtra, the Mahadev Temple stands as a living testimony to the sophisticated artistry of the Chalukyan era from the 11th–12th centuries. This temple, locally revered as one of the legendary “Panchkashi” (Five Great Kashis), seamlessly blends religious significance with architectural excellence. Originally established as a Vaishnava place of worship, the temple was later re-consecrated to honor Lord Shiva, as revealed by various inscriptions and the now-prominent Shivalinga at its core.

Architecturally, the temple captivates with its four-foot-high, star-shaped plinth and a raised platform that offers a commanding view of the surrounding village. Visitors first pass through an elegantly carved entry hall before entering the open assembly hall, supported by fifty meticulously sculpted pillars. The sanctum, or garbhagriha, houses the Shivalinga, protected by a shimmering metallic cobra, and is accessible via an ante-chamber.

What makes Mahadev Temple truly special is the wealth of iconography spread across its walls and pillars. The exteriors dazzle with depictions of goddesses, hamsas (celestial swans), and lions, while twenty-four shaktis—the representations of Vishnu’s energies—stand in quiet vigil. Further adorned with images of Gajalakshmi, Varaha, and other deities, the temple’s embellishments narrate stories from both Vaishnavite and Shaivite traditions. The design of the interior dome and mandapa suggest a space historically used for dance and music rituals.
