About the place ...

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple, located deep in the western Ghats of Maharashtra, is revered as the sixth of India’s twelve Jyotirlingas and marks the source of the Bhima River. Surrounded by lush forests and biodiversity, this Hemadpanti-style shrine is not just a spiritual center but also a natural sanctuary and cultural icon. According to myth, Shiva manifested here to defeat the demon Bhima, and his act of penance melted into the ground, forming the river and the unique Jyotirlinga

Originally constructed between the 8th and 13th centuries, with stone-panel walls rich in Dashavatara reliefs, Brahma, Ganapati, and Parashurama motifs, the temple is acclaimed for its exquisite Indo-Aryan and Hemadpanti architecture. Five steps descend into the sanctum, which houses the self-manifested Shivalinga—distinguished here by a vertical split symbolizing the unity of Shiva and Shakti. Opposite, Parvati’s idol presides over the sanctum, and a massive Nandi guards the entrance. The pillars and doorframes are intricately sculpted, narrating stories from Hindu mythology; Roman-style bells donated by Chimaji Appa after the Maratha victory over the Portuguese still hang prominently

Bhimashankar’s setting—at 1,000 meters above sea level, within the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary (established 1984)—offers dramatic views and a sanctuary for the endangered Shekru (Indian giant flying squirrel), leopards, boar, deer, hornbills, and rare plant life. The route has over 200 steps descending past local shops and shrines, with alternative entry via a mountain pass from Raigad’s Karjat village for trekkers. Nearby attractions include Gupt Bhimashankar, Nagfani peak, Kokan Kada cliff, Hanuman Tal, and sacred Mahadev Van

Festivals see lakhs of devotees—all drawn by the temple’s powerful legend, tranquil setting, and fulfilling rituals. Open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with lodging and prasadam available in the temple town
