October to March is ideal for comfortable sightseeing and experiencing the temple’s grandeur in pleasant weather. The best time to visit is during major festivals, especially Navratri (Ashwin bright fortnight)
About the place ...
Located atop the historic Durgadi Fort in Kalyan, the Durga Devi Temple is a beacon of faith and history, drawing millions of devotees each year, especially during the vibrant Navratri festival. The temple’s roots trace back to the rule of the Satavahanas and the legendary king Yajna Shri Gautamiputra Satakarni, with major renovations by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the late 17th century. Shivaji not only repaired the fort’s defenses but also built and restored the temple, after discovering a buried treasure at the fort’s foundations—an auspicious event believed to be the blessing of Goddess Durga herself
Kalyan, an ancient seaport central to regional trade in the Satavahana period, gained strategic and economic prominence over the centuries. The fort and temple faced further changes under the Adilshahi Sultanate, Marathas, and later the British, suffering and surviving periods of both neglect and reverence. Maratha rule cemented the temple’s spiritual importance, renaming the fort “Durgadi Killa” and celebrating the goddess with grand rituals, festivals, and new constructions
The temple complex is accessed via the Ganesh Darwaza entrance of the fort, a hilltop site overlooking Kalyan creek and the Ulhas river. After passing a small Ganesha shrine, devotees enter the paved courtyard, where the main Durga temple—guarded by carved elephants and royal symbols—stands on the left. The assembly hall leads into the sanctum, where the 3.5-foot Panchdhatu Durga idol stands, crowned and four-armed, with weapons and a lion. The inner walls gleam with gold-plated plates and intricate artwork, while a metal mask (tandala), Ganesha, and other deity idols are preserved nearby. Behind the sanctum is an inscription detailing the temple’s storied history.
Festivals, especially Navratri, transform the site into a bustling pilgrimage center, with women performing rituals, donating sarees and coconuts, and participating in daily aartis, bhajans, and kirtans. The fort and temple are illuminated at night, with special Navchandi Yag performed. Darshan is available daily from 7 AM–1 PM and 4–9 PM.
The temple is not only a symbol of spiritual strength but also of historical resilience amid centuries of change. The fort’s connection to Shivaji Maharaj’s navy, military strategies, and cultural legacy makes it a must-visit for both pilgrims and history enthusiasts
