About the place ...

The Tikaleshwar Temple, situated in the hills of Sangameshwar Taluka, is a sacred and scenic destination dedicated to Lord Shiva. Perched on a high plateau amidst the Sahyadri mountain range, this ancient temple is one of the oldest Shiva shrines in the region and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys and forested slopes. It is not only a religious site but also a favorite for trekkers and nature enthusiasts.

The name “Tikaleshwar” is derived from “Tikalesh,” an ancient form of Lord Shiva. The temple is constructed using traditional stone masonry and features a peaceful inner sanctum with a naturally formed Shiva Linga. Local legends say that sages and saints meditated here centuries ago, drawn by the energy and stillness of the place. Despite its remote location, the temple continues to attract pilgrims, especially during the holy month of Shravan and on Maha Shivaratri.

The trek to Tikaleshwar Temple is moderately challenging, making it a favorite among offbeat travelers and trekking groups. The path winds through dense forest, small waterfalls, and mountain meadows, providing a rejuvenating journey for body and soul. The monsoon season enhances the beauty of the landscape, although the trail may become slippery.

From the top, visitors can see a breathtaking view of the Bav River valley and the surrounding Sahyadri ranges. It’s a perfect escape for those seeking solitude, spiritual connection, and natural beauty. Nearby attractions include Marleshwar Temple, Devrukh, and Sangameshwar village, known for their cultural and natural heritage.
