About the place ...

Perched gracefully on a hill at an altitude of 4,500 feet, the Shri Saptashrungi Devi Temple in Vani is one of Maharashtra’s most revered pilgrimage destinations. Counted among the “three and a half” Shakti Peethas of the state, it represents the divine mother’s abode where Goddess Saptashrungi is believed to embody the combined energies of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. This sacred site, also called the half Shakti Peeth, holds immense mythological, spiritual, and historical significance.

According to ancient legends, when Goddess Sati immolated herself after her father Daksha insulted Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu cut her body into pieces to pacify Shiva’s anger. These fragments fell in different parts of India, forming the 51 Shakti Peethas — and Saptashrungi Devi is one of them, where a part of the Goddess’s form is believed to have descended. The temple is also associated with Sage Markandeya, who had divine visions of the Goddess annihilating the demon Mahishasura at this very site.

The name ‘Saptashrungi’ originates from Sapta (seven) and Shrunga (peaks). Mythology recounts that when Hanuman carried the Dronagiri mountain to aid Lakshmana, seven fragments of it fell here, forming the seven hills that embrace the temple. The temple’s scenic location near Vani–Nanduri village makes it a destination of immense beauty and devotion, about 77 km from Nashik city.

The 8‑foot‑tall idol of the Goddess, covered in vermilion, is the centerpiece of devotion. With 18 arms, each holding a different weapon, she is revered as Ashtadasha Bahu Devi — the one with eighteen hands. The idol’s adornments, such as the gleaming crown, ornate jewelry, and silver ornaments, reflect her splendor as the Divine Mother and Protector. Behind the temple lie ancient kundas (sacred ponds), once numbering 108, with a few still preserved. These include Tambool Tirtha, its water tinted red by betel leaf offerings, and Kajal Tirtha, said to be where the Goddess washed her eyes.

The spiritual energy of Saptashrungi Gad has drawn saints and devotees for centuries. Among its divine visitors are Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and saints like Nivrittinath, Dnyaneshwar, and Machhindranath. The temple is also associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who frequently sought the Goddess’s blessings.

Grand Navratri festivals in Chaitra (March–April) and Ashwin (September–October) transform this mountain shrine into a sea of devotion. Rituals such as Durga Ashtami, Kalashtami, and monthly Navchandi Yajnas attract thousands. The temple’s daily rituals include Kakad Arti at dawn, Panchamrit Mahapuja in the morning, and Maha Naivedya Arti at noon, offering devotees a divine rhythm of worship throughout the day.

The temple is managed by the Shree Saptashrungi Niwasini Devi Trust, offering well-maintained accommodations, meal facilities, and a ropeway service that operates from 4:45 a.m. to 8:45 p.m., enabling an easy ascent to the shrine. For those preferring traditional devotion, around 400 well-built steps lead to the sanctum.

Today, as one of Maharashtra’s most visited pilgrimage centers, the Saptashrungi Temple of Vani continues to inspire faith and awe through its blend of natural beauty, mythology, and spirituality
