About the place ...

At the serene confluence of the Kadru and Vinata rivers, nestled at the foot of the majestic Dhodap Fort, lies the quiet village of Dhodambe in Chandvad taluka of Nashik district. This ancient site is home to two remarkable monuments—the Vateshwar Mahadev Temple and the Vishnu Temple—dating back to the 8th–9th centuries. Together, they offer a glimpse into the architectural brilliance and devotional artistry of India’s medieval temple traditions.

The Vateshwar Temple, a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands as a striking example of the Nagara style. The temple’s entrance is adorned with guardian deities, graceful female figures, and finely sculpted Yakshas supporting the roof. Kirtimukhas embellish the lintel, while an image of Lord Ganesha watches over a frieze of the Saptamatrikas (Seven Mother Goddesses). The approach to the sanctum features a spacious Sabhamandap with beautifully carved wall panels and a ceiling that rises in graceful tiers to a central hanging pendant. Within the sanctum, a Shiva Lingam is venerated, with copper and lacquer masks ceremoniously placed upon it during festivals. Outside the temple stand a Nandi pavilion and an elegant Deepmala (lamp tower), adding to the spiritual ambiance.

Only a few feet away stands the Vishnu Temple, slightly smaller but more ornate than its counterpart. This temple displays a well-planned layout of a Sabhamandap, Antaral (anteroom), and Garbhagriha (sanctum). Its ceilings and walls are adorned with exquisite floral motifs and carvings depicting scenes from Lord Krishna’s life, including the mesmerizing Kaliya Mardan and playful Krishna Leelas. The sculptural artistry on the outer walls surpasses expectations, featuring Surasundaris (celestial maidens), hunting scenes on camels and elephants, and representations of deities such as Vishnu’s Varaha and Narasimha avatars, along with Shiva, Surya, and Kubera. These carvings testify to the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of the period.

Several smaller shrines dot the temple premises, dedicated to deities like Ganesh, Vitthal–Rukmini, Shri Ram, Hanuman, Dattatreya, Gorakshanath, Bhairavnath, and Jalalanath. A unique carved wooden idol of an 18-armed goddess is another highlight. The Vateshwar fair, held annually during Datta Jayanti, draws devotees from across the region. Dhodambe’s reputation as the “Land of Saints” and its historical association with India’s freedom movement make it a destination rich in spirituality and heritage.

Both temples are state-protected monuments under the Archaeology Department and represent a proud legacy of early Chalukyan art in Maharashtra
