Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple, Velhale

Rising above a high stone plinth in Velhale’s heart, the Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple exemplifies classic Bhumija-style architecture a style prevalent in the Yadava dynasty era, possibly under Seunachandra II (11th century CE). Local tradition venerates Velhale as the birthplace of Sage Kapila, who personally enshrined the Shivling here, linking temple lore directly to revered scripture.

The temple complex includes a pillared sabhamandap adorned with stone carvings and a vestibule leading to the sanctum. The Nandi statue faces the sanctum, and a homa kund graces the entry for fire rituals. The sanctum’s five-part doorway flaunts beautifully carved guardians and a Ganesh sculpture above. The Shivling is square-shaped and rests on a Sri Yantra base, with the shalunka sculpted to resemble a Kadamba leaf—an extremely rare design. The rear wall houses images of Parvati and Ganesh, with a stone well and seating for devotees outside.

Festival rituals echo centuries-old traditions, and local Christians cite the temple in Samarth Ramdas Swami’s famous aarti: “Aisa Shankar Shobhe Umapati Velhala.” The temple is listed among the 108 confluence Shiva shrines of India, often receiving devotees’ vows for fulfillment and spiritual blessings

Despite some damage over time, the temple preserves its ancient ambiance and historic detail. Monthly worship, especially Mondays and the Shravan season, continue to draw large crowds, keeping the spiritual legacy vibrant. The temple’s peaceful courtyard is often used for meditation and quiet reflection
