About the place ...

Changdev Temple is an architectural masterpiece, measuring an impressive 32 meters in length and 43 feet square across its Mandapa (assembly hall). Built from locally sourced black basalt and lime mortar, the temple showcases classic Hemadpanti features: interlocking stones without lime or cement, deep horizontal bands, decorative vines, and intricately carved arches. The sabhamandap (main hall) is supported by sixteen ornate pillars in four rows, plunging visitors into an atmosphere of devotional grandeur

The sanctum houses a vermilion-coated stone idol of Changdev Maharaj, seated on a raised platform and flanked by marble images of Ganesh and Shiva. Pillared verandas, carved Apsaras and male deities, and celestial musicians fill the interiors, while the doors and ceiling feature circular domes and wheel motifs representing divine energy. The exterior walls are adorned with relief sculptures of sursundaris (celestial maidens), Vishnu, mythical beasts, and elegant water spouts (makara-pranalika) emptying into sacred basins

Nearby ruins and recent excavations have revealed remnants of older shrines, Hanuman and Shiva temples with prominent lingams and Nandi statues, and ancient inscriptions naming King Indradev and his minister Changdev, whose legends are entwined with worship and local history

Changdev Maharaj is said to have lived for 1,400 years, achieved supernatural yogic feats, and authored philosophical and poetic works in Marathi. His legendary encounter with Saint Dnyaneshwar—where a moving brick wall greeted him—remains a cornerstone of Maharashtra’s spiritual tradition. The site is also remembered as the center of the early 20th-century Temple Entry Movement, echoing social reform and justice

The riverside temple complex has evolved into a tranquil spot for meditation, boating, and heritage tourism. Protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, it remains a cherished place for spiritual seekers, history enthusiasts, and festival crowds
