About the place ...

On the banks of the Vashishti River, at the foot of the historic Gowalkot Fort in Chiplun, stands the sacred twin shrine of Lord Someshwar Mahadev and Goddess Karanjeshwari — a revered jagrut devsthan (living shrine) known for its deep devotion and rare traditions. These temples carry both spiritual significance and historical charm, with legends, rituals, and architecture that draw thousands of pilgrims year-round.

Gowalkot Fort, renamed Govindgad after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1660, once guarded Chiplun’s thriving port and river trade route. Local legend recounts that Goddess Karanjeshwari first manifested amid karanja bushes in a place called Singhasan. She requested turmeric and vermilion from a village girl but vanished before receiving them. Later, she reappeared at the present temple site and revealed in a devotee’s dream that a pearl from her nose ornament was caught in those bushes. The discovery of the pearl confirmed her presence, and villagers built a temple, naming her Karanjeshwari — Goddess of the Karanja bushes.

The present temple, renovated on 19 February 1969, is the family deity for Patwardhan, Gole, Phanse, Dixit, Puranik, and Deval families, and the village deity for Pethmap–Gowalkot residents. A grand archway from the main road leads to about 18–20 stone steps ascending to the courtyards, paved in stone and adorned with a large Deepmala (lamp tower). The layout includes a Darshan Mandap, Sabhamandap, and sanctum. Within a beautifully carved wooden canopy (makhar), Goddess Karanjeshwari is depicted four-armed and riding a tiger, adorned with exquisite ornaments and framed by an intricate silver halo. At the sanctum’s center rests Lord Someshwar’s silver‑clad Shivalinga, a focal point of worship.

The temple is famed for its unique Shimga Festival rituals, observed in Phalguna month. Locals consider Pethmap her maternal home and Gowalkot her marital home. On Phalguna Shuddha Trayodashi, her palanquin travels to Pethmap, starting the festival. The Sherne ritual held on Chaturdashi is a rare tradition where devotees secretly bury a coconut and a slip with their name near the riverbank. The next day, the palanquins of Karanjeshwari and Someshwar pass by, and a ceremonial trident is used to unearth the Sherne. If a devotee’s offering is found, it is believed their vow will be fulfilled. On Phalguna Purnima, the palanquin returns to Gowalkot.

Historically, many Maratha commanders sought the goddess’s blessings before battle. Leaders like Kanhoji Zunjarrao (1700), Dadoji Malhar (1701), and Parshuram Bhau Patwardhan (1781) prayed here during key campaigns. The shrine was granted an annual allowance by the British in 1874, continued by the Maharashtra government.

Other festivals celebrated here include Vaishakh Krishna Chaturdashi (temple anniversary), Shravan Shuddha Trayodashi, Narali Purnima, Navratri, Diwali Padwa, and Tripurari Purnima. The temple remains open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers lodging, dining, and access to Govindgad Fort via 300 steps, rewarding visitors with panoramic views of Chiplun
