About the place ...

Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple, perched atop a verdant hill in Yerwada, Pune, is celebrated for its tranquil atmosphere, panoramic city views, and spiritual significance. Believed by locals to be over 3,000 years old and associated with the Pandavas, this ancient Shiva shrine charms pilgrims and peace-seekers alike with its blend of natural beauty and timeless devotion. The temple’s journey begins at the base of the hill, marked by a monumental Lord Shiva statue and a grand gateway. Visitors can walk up a shaded stairway starting near Bund Garden Bridge or drive up the gentle vehicle road to the summit, making it accessible to devotees of all ages

According to legend, the demon Tarakasura gained near-immortality through Shiva’s boon but was ultimately vanquished by Shiva’s son Kartikeya. On his deathbed, Tarakasura repented, and Shiva promised that worship at this site—where Tarakasura had performed penance—would remove sins, conferring the name Tarkeshwar to the hill and temple. The shrine houses a beautifully carved natural stone linga (swayambhu), worshipped for generations as a powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva

The temple complex is a spiritual retreat, surrounded by trees, birds, and verdant gardens. It features a vertical lamp tower (deepmala), historical shrines to Renuka Mata, Radha–Krishna, Dattatreya, Sai Baba, Vitthal–Rukmini, Shanidev, and others. The Renuka Mata temple is considered the oldest structure here, while other shrines were added during the 1990s renovation and beautification drive, which also improved the gardens and seating facilities. Inside the main hall, a serene ambiance prevails, with idols of Ganesh, Hanuman, Kalbhairav–Jogeshwari, and Ram–Lakshman–Sita, alongside the main linga. The main original temple hall is said to have been of wood, later reconstructed in stone

Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is an active center of worship, especially during Maha Shivratri and Shravan. Devotees perform abhishek and aarti, relax beneath the trees, and experience moments of stillness while taking in vistas over Pune city. The site is open daily with extended hours on Mondays, and events and bhajan sessions are held for special festivals
