Shri Devdeveshwar Temple, known as Parvati Temple, is Pune’s most iconic hilltop shrine and historical landmark, perched atop Parvati Hill and offering panoramic vistas over the city. Built in 1749 CE by Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa to fulfill his mother Kashibai’s healing vow, the temple is among Pune’s oldest heritage structures and an enduring symbol of Maratha devotion and artistry. According to legend, Kashibai’s miraculous cure here led to the installation of three majestic gold idols by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj—Shankar (73 kg), Parvati (14 kg), and Ganapati (8 kg)—which were later replaced after thefts in the British era with silver-gilt statues

The temple complex is reached via 103 broad stone steps that were designed for elephants to ascend with ease—a testament to Peshwa engineering foresight. From the marble-paved gateway, devotees enter a vast courtyard and ascend into the principal sanctum, which houses the Devdeveshwar (Shankar-Parvati) idol along with accompanying sub-shrines for Ganapati, Vishnu, Surya, and Devi in each corner, following the traditional Shiv Panchayatana plan. Architectural highlights include a rectangular base, octagonal spire, fortified walls, and elements from Rajput, Mughal, Gujarati, and local Marathi traditions. Inside, scalloped pillars and ornate arches frame the Swayambhu Shivalinga, carved from river Gandaki stone with natural veining likened to brain patterns. Behind stands the silver-coated image of Shankar in padmasana posture, flanked by Parvati and a two-armed Ganesh. The shrine’s height—about 25 meters—makes it a visible city sentinel and a favored sunrise spot. Twice a year, on March 22 and September 23 (the equinoxes), the rising sun’s rays fall directly on the main idol, drawing crowds for its celestial symbolism

Parvati Hill is also home to shrines for Vishnu–Vitthal–Rukmini and Ganapati, a splendid black-stone Nandi near the temple tank, and remnants of the original Parvati Wada (Peshwa palace), where Nanasaheb Peshwa retired after the battle of Panipat.
