The Mahadji Shinde Chhatri in Wanwadi, Pune, is a stunning monument complex honoring the legendary Maratha general Mahadji Shinde, who restored Maratha power in the 18th century and served as commander-in-chief under the Peshwas. Mahadji built the original Shiva temple here in 1794; after his passing that year, his samadhi (tomb) and memorial—known as a chhatri or cenotaph—were constructed at the same site, opposite the temple. Later, Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia of Gwalior commissioned the ornate marble memorial building in 1910, which was designed by the Bombay architectural firm Shapurjee N. Chandabhoy

The complex is walled, and entry is ticketed. Upon passing the gateway, visitors find the Maruti temple, followed by the striking two-storey Chhatri hall—a captivating blend of British and Rajasthani architectural styles. Its black-and-white marble, sculpted arches, floral ceilings, and English-style colored glass windows create a visual spectacle. The hall is adorned with paintings and portraits of Sinde descendants. Majestic carvings and idol sculptures embellish the steeple and upper facade, with doorways rich in floral, animal, and saint motifs

Inside, a marble Nandi greets visitors at the Mahadev temple doors. The sanctum features a shivalinga and a statue of Mahadji Shinde, alongside surrounding shrines, wall paintings, and upper-level galleries reached via spiral staircase. The main Shiva temple’s black stone base and sculpted yellow stone spire echo classical Maratha artistry, reminiscent of Ranakpur’s soaring vimanas, with a central golden kalash on top. Smaller shrines in the complex include dedicated temples to Vitthal–Rukmini, Ram, and Hanuman—all established by the Shinde family in various eras. Mahadji’s samadhi, under an ornate domed pavilion, preserves his mask and a horse statue to commemorate his cavalry heritage.

The Chhatri complex is not only significant for its architecture but also for the events and festivals it hosts. Mahashivratri, Mahadji’s anniversaries, and other key occasions draw thousands for aarti, bhajans, and cultural programs. The site opens daily from 7 AM to 8 PM.
