About the place ...

The Dhootpapeshwar Temple, situated in Dhopeshwar village of Rajapur Taluka in Ratnagiri District, is one of the most ancient and spiritually significant Shiva temples in Konkan. Nestled amid the lush green hills and serene banks of the Mrudani River, this sacred shrine has stood for over a thousand years, blending divine heritage with breathtaking natural beauty. The name “Dhootpapeshwar” translates to “The Lord who washes away sins,” symbolizing the temple’s essence — a place where devotees come to purify the mind and soul.

The temple is located around 5 kilometers from Rajapur town and is a prime attraction for both pilgrims and tourists. Its architecture reflects a timeless legacy of Konkan craftsmanship, with a spacious wooden sabhamandap (assembly hall), intricately carved pillars, and a black stone sanctum (garbhagriha) housing the self-manifested Shivlinga. The temple’s wooden structure, decorated with carvings of flowers, animals, and motifs of local flora such as the sacred Kailaschafa tree, showcases the artistic excellence of the region’s artisans. Natural colors made from leaves, bark, and flowers were used in the paintings and carvings — a testament to the temple’s ancient origins.

One of the temple’s most remarkable features is the continuous flow of water over the Shivlinga, believed to be naturally sourced from within the hill. Beside the temple flows the Mrudani River, cascading down black rocks to form a mesmerizing waterfall known as Kotitirtha. During the monsoon season, this waterfall comes alive, attracting nature lovers and photographers. The soothing sound of flowing water and the tranquil surroundings make it a deeply spiritual experience.

Every evening, after the final Maha Puja, the priests traditionally arrange a game of Saripat (a ritual dice game) for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati before closing the sanctum. Devotees believe that by morning, the pieces are mysteriously scattered — a sign that the divine couple have graced the temple during the night.

The temple holds a deep connection to Rajapur’s Ganga Utsav, when pilgrims first bathe in the hot springs of Unhale, then in the Rajapur Ganga, and finally visit Dhootpapeshwar to offer abhishek. Local legends tell of Peshwa Madhavrao’s visit to the temple and his offering of a Shaligram, while the Binivale Sardars donated a golden crown still used in rituals today.

With its peaceful ambiance, mythological importance, and scenic surroundings, Dhootpapeshwar Temple is a must-visit for both spiritual seekers and heritage explorers.
