About the place ...
Shivneri Fort, located in Junnar Taluka of Pune district, is one of the most important historical forts in Maharashtra. This majestic fort is famously known as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, making it a sacred destination for history enthusiasts, patriots, and cultural travelers alike. Nestled amidst the rugged Sahyadri hills, Shivneri Fort stands tall with its rich legacy, ancient architecture, and breathtaking views.
The fort dates back to the Satavahana period and was later strengthened during the Yadava and Bahmani dynasties. Spread across a strategic hilltop, it was an ideal military base, offering both security and accessibility. Shivneri has seven massive gates, strong stone ramparts, and several structures that narrate tales of Maratha valor. Inside the fort, one can visit the Shivkunj, which houses a beautiful idol of young Shivaji along with his mother Jijabai, reminding visitors of the upbringing that shaped one of India’s greatest warriors. The fort also has water reservoirs like Badami Talav, old rock-cut caves, and temples, adding to its historical charm.
The trek to Shivneri Fort is moderately easy and highly rewarding. As you climb through winding pathways and stone steps, panoramic views of the Junnar region unfold, showcasing lush greenery during monsoon and a golden landscape in winter. The fort attracts not only history lovers but also trekkers, photographers, and families who wish to experience a blend of heritage and natural beauty.
Nearby attractions such as Lenyadri Caves (a Buddhist rock-cut site and one of the Ashtavinayak Temples) and Junnar’s ancient caves make the journey even more enriching. Local markets around the fort also offer a glimpse of rural Maharashtrian life.
