About the place ...

Revan Siddheshwar Temple stands as one of the spiritual icons of Solapur, Maharashtra—a district often called the “Southern Kashi” for its rich Shaiva traditions. Situated in the city’s Motibag area, this ancient temple honors Revan Siddha, an influential Lingayat saint counted among the Panchmahaacharyas of the Veerashaiva line. Revered as the founding guru of the Kadsiddheshwar tradition, he is said to have personally blessed Siddharameshwar, Solapur’s patron saint. Revan Siddha, also called Kadsiddha (“the accomplished one who drank poison”), is believed to respond to devotees’ prayers even today—making the site a place of living faith for all communities, especially Lingayat and Veerashaiva followers

Legend and history intertwine here: Revan Siddha was a contemporary of Gorakhnath (circa 1050–1150 CE). After showing supernatural prowess in defeating evil forces and redeeming King Bijjala of the Kalachuri dynasty, he migrated to Sonallagi (Solapur), living near today’s temple and guiding scores of followers. His footprints remain at the site known as Kirteshwar Math, and he later moved to the Motibag area for meditation and worship, where the present temple stands. Here, he spread Shaiva devotion, initiated disciples, and merged back into the Someshwar Linga from which he had originally appeared, closing his earthly chapter in the 12th century

The temple complex exudes the ambiance of a medieval fort, with high stone walls and a prominent deepmal (lamp tower) greeting visitors. The sanctum’s spire is visible from afar, symbolizing the spiritual ascent sought by pilgrims. Entering the enclosure, devotees encounter shrines for Ganapati, Dakshinamukhi Hanuman, serpent deities, and the 64th Shivling out of 68 established by Siddheshwar Maharaj. The main Darshan here is of the underground Panchamukhi Shiva Linga, accessed via a staircase and covered in brass. Above, the chamber houses a Nandi—while the multi-tiered spire is adorned with Nandi carvings, miniature shrines, and crowned by a brass kalash.

The temple is bustling on Sundays and Mondays, when crowds gather for morning and evening aarti. Weekly Mahaprasad is served on Sundays, and the two annual fairs—on Makar Sankranti and in Shravan—see thousands participate in rituals, processions, and community worship. On festival days, the palanquin and idol of Siddheshwar, Solapur’s deity, are brought here in homage to his guru
