Motorable road till the base. From base, well-constructed steps up to the temple.

If you wish to experience real glory of Marleshwar, and not afraid of weather, then Monsoon, that too in months of August and September is the best season. Otherwise, October to February is ideal for visiting Marleshwar Temple due to pleasant weather. The monsoon season (July–September) adds to the scenic beauty but should be approached cautiously due to slippery paths.

About the place ...

The Marleshwar Temple, located in the scenic Sangameshwar Taluka, is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in the Ratnagiri district. Nestled deep inside the Western Ghats, the temple is uniquely situated within a natural cave, surrounded by dense forests, hills, and waterfalls. It is a popular pilgrimage site as well as a trekker’s paradise, offering a beautiful blend of spirituality and adventure tourism.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple’s sanctum is set within a dark cave, housing a naturally formed Shivling. The temple is revered for its mystical setting and the divine energy that devotees believe resonates through the cave walls. As you approach the temple, the sound of the nearby Dhareshwar Waterfall enhances the sacred ambiance.

To reach Marleshwar, visitors must climb over 500 stone steps that meander through hills and forest paths, making the journey itself a test of devotion and endurance. But the effort is well rewarded — the panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, especially during and after the monsoon, when the landscape is lush and vibrant. On a clear day, you can spot rolling hills, valleys, and cascading streams, making it a favorite spot for nature photographers.

The temple sees thousands of devotees during Mahashivratri, when a grand fair is held, and religious rituals are performed.

Facilities are basic near the temple, so it’s recommended to carry essentials, wear trekking-friendly clothes, and travel during daylight. Local food stalls along the steps offer simple Konkan snacks, and tea.
