About the place ...

Gautameshwar Temple, located in the sacred village of Prakasha on the banks of the Gomti River, is one of the most revered spiritual destinations in Maharashtra. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is deeply rooted in the legendary tale of Gautama Rishi, one of the Saptarishis, who installed the Shiva Linga here after receiving divine blessings from Lord Shiva himself. Known as Dakshin Kashi, Prakasha holds immense religious importance, and many devotees believe that a pilgrimage to Northern Kashi is incomplete without visiting this shrine.

The temple’s origins date back to the 13th–14th centuries and showcase beautiful medieval architecture. Its layout consists of a mukhamandap (entrance hall), sabhamandap (assembly hall), antaral (intermediate chamber), and garbhagriha (sanctum). Decorated pillars, exquisite stone carvings, floral motifs, and sculptures of deities enhance the temple’s charm. Inside the sanctum, a black stone base supports a reddish Shiva Linga, an unusual yet visually striking form of Shiva worship.

The temple complex also houses a Hanuman shrine with a rare idol holding a mace in one hand and a flower in the other. The expansive riverfront ghat nearby becomes the center of activity during major festivals. The grand Simhastha Kumbha Mela held every twelve years draws thousands from across India. Mahashivaratri, Shravan Mondays, and Amavasya days see high congregation, with numerous devotees performing sacred baths, shanti rites, and shraddha ceremonies at the ghat
