About the place ...

Dhamapur Lake, nestled in Malvan Taluka of Sindhudurg district, is one of the most scenic and historically significant freshwater lakes in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Surrounded by lush green hills, dense forests, and coconut plantations, Dhamapur Lake is a perfect getaway for nature lovers, eco-tourists, and those seeking a tranquil retreat away from bustling tourist hubs.

Built in 1530 during the reign of Nagesh Desai of the Vijaynagar dynasty, the lake was created by damming a local river. It is now one of the oldest man-made lakes in Maharashtra. Spanning over 10 hectares, the lake is known for its crystal-clear water, perennial nature (it never dries even in summer), and ecological richness. It supplies water to nearby villages and plays a crucial role in the region’s agriculture.

One of the most appealing aspects of Dhamapur Lake is its breathtaking natural surroundings. The lake is bordered by a thick belt of forest, part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, making it home to numerous species of birds, butterflies, and aquatic life. Boating on the lake is a peaceful experience, especially during early mornings when the mist hovers over the water and birds call from the treetops.

On the banks of the lake stands the revered Bhagwati Devi Temple, a place of local worship and cultural importance. The temple complex often becomes a center of festivities during local festivals, offering visitors a chance to witness traditional Konkan rituals and community gatherings.

Dhamapur Lake is also a great spot for picnics, nature photography, bird watching, and light trekking. Nearby attractions include Tarkarli Beach, Malvan town, and the Rock Garden, allowing visitors to plan a well-rounded itinerary.
