About the place ...
The Vishnu Temple, popularly known as the Daitya Sudan Temple, is an architectural and spiritual treasure located in Lonar town of Buldhana District. Built during the Chalukya dynasty in the 6th century CE, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and commemorates his victory over the demon Lonasura, after whom the Lonar Crater is named.
The temple is one of the finest examples of Hemadpanthi architecture, showcasing beautifully carved pillars, intricate sculptures, and ancient stone artistry. Despite being partially in ruins, the temple’s grandeur still speaks of its glorious past. The central idol of Lord Vishnu is seen in his victorious form as “Daitya Sudan,” slaying the demon. Surrounding structures also feature carvings of deities, mythological events, and decorative motifs that highlight the artistic excellence of medieval craftsmen.
For devotees, the temple is a symbol of divine power and protection, while for history lovers and architecture enthusiasts, it is a priceless heritage monument. Its proximity to Lonar Lake makes it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring the region. Visitors can combine spiritual experiences with natural exploration, creating a holistic journey of history, faith, and nature.
