Best time to visit Mallikarjun Mandir at Shirambe is during the monsoon and winter months (June to February), when the greenery and flowing water enhance the temple’s charm
About the place ...
Nestled deep in the scenic beauty of Konkan, Mallikarjun Mandir at Shirambe is one of the most unique and lesser-known temples in Ratnagiri district. Located near Burumbad village, this temple is surrounded by dense greenery, winding village roads, and the calm embrace of nature. Shirambe itself is a small and peaceful hamlet, but it is home to a truly special temple dedicated to Lord Mallikarjun, a form of Lord Shiva.
What makes Mallikarjun Mandir in Shirambe different is its fascinating structure. The temple is surrounded on all four sides by a moat filled with water, giving it the appearance of a water temple. To enter, visitors cross a small bridge, adding to the charm of the experience. The sanctum of the temple is built slightly below ground level, and it always remains filled with water, creating a mystical atmosphere. A beautifully built wooden pavilion (sabhamandap) stands in front of the sanctum, where devotees gather to offer prayers. The temple is roofed with traditional Konkan-style tiles, blending perfectly with the lush surroundings and peaceful village life.
The temple is not just about architecture, but also about legends. A local folklore tells the story of a farmer who once harvested ragi (nachni) in abundance, much more than expected. While threshing the grains on a large stone, he struck it with his measuring tool, and the stone cracked into three pieces. Within the stone, divine symbols were revealed. One piece of the stone was brought to Shirambe and established as Lord Mallikarjun, while locals called the stone itself Nachandev. This legend continues to add spiritual significance to the temple.
Visiting Mallikarjun Mandir is like stepping into a serene world, far from the rush of city life. The sound of birds, the surrounding green forests, and the cool water around the temple make it a perfect destination for devotees and nature lovers alike.
