About the place ...

Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Panchnadi village, Dapoli taluka, Ratnagiri district, the Sapteshwar Temple is an architectural and spiritual treasure of Konkan. Dedicated to Lord Mahadeva (Shiva), the temple beautifully combines stone and wood construction, reflecting the traditional Konkani temple architecture. The entire temple premises is built using laterite stone (jambha stone), with a strong and graceful compound wall enclosing the sacred space.

The main shrine is a wooden structure with intricately carved pillars and roof supports, each shaped like a majestic peacock. This artistry is a fine example of the craftsmanship for which Konkan’s temples are renowned. Inside, a finely sculpted stone Nandi sits as the guardian of Lord Shiva. Few steps leads us into Sanctum Sanctorum where lies the sacred Shivlinga. The pillars of the temple are adorned with detailed carvings, adding depth and beauty to the divine atmosphere. Apart from the main shrine, the temple complex also follows the Panchayatan style, housing deities of Vishnu and other gods.

One of the highlights of the complex is the ancient Vishnu temple, which enshrines a rare and exquisite idol of Lord Vishnu in Keshava form. The deity holds the Padma (lotus), Shankha (conch), Chakra (discus), and Gada (mace) in perfect order. On the left side stands Goddess Lakshmi, while Garuda is depicted on the right. The backdrop of the idol is equally fascinating, featuring the Dashavatara—Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, and Rama—beautifully carved in stone.

The temple’s wooden roof and tiled structure create a unique geometric pattern, allowing ample light and air to circulate in the spacious Sabhamandap, where devotees can sit and pray. A Ganesh idol graces the entrance of the sanctum. Within the premises lies a proportionately built square Pushkarini (sacred pond) in laterite stone, with steps descending into the water, symbolizing purity and continuity of tradition. The presence of deepmalas (lamp towers), typical of Konkani temples, further enhances its spiritual charm.

Adding to its appeal, the temple is located close to the serene Kolthare Beach, offering visitors an opportunity to combine spiritual pilgrimage with natural beauty. The peaceful ambiance of the temple, surrounded by lush greenery and coastal charm, makes it a must-visit destination for devotees, history enthusiasts, and tourists alike.
