About the place ...
Kopeshwar Temple, located in Khidrapur, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Dating back to the 12th century, it was constructed by King Gandaraditya of the Shilahara dynasty between 1109 and 1178 CE. Situated on the banks of the Krishna river, the temple is renowned for its ancient architecture and artistic beauty.
Accessible from both Kolhapur and Sangli, Kopeshwar Temple showcases intricate carvings of deities and secular figures on its exterior. The temple complex is divided into four main parts: Swargamandapa (vestibule with an open top), Sabhamandapa (assembly hall), Antaral (vestibule), and Garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum). Notably, the sanctum houses a unique feature—an idol of Lord Vishnu (known as Dhopeshwar) alongside the Shivalinga, facing northward. Interestingly, this is the only Shiva temple in India where Vishnu is also worshipped.
The temple’s Swargamandapa and Sabhamandapa are adorned with old pillars and intricate carvings depicting gods and various artistic poses. The semi-circular ceiling inside boasts unparalleled engravings, while outside, the entire “Shivaleelamrit” (tales of Shiva’s divine acts) is intricately carved. The temple’s base is supported by elephant statues, adding to its architectural grandeur.
Built during a time when the Shilahara kings were predominantly Jain, Kopeshwar Temple stands as a testament to their respect for diverse religions, as they not only preserved but also embellished Hindu temples like this one. Its serene location by the Krishna river adds to the spiritual and aesthetic experience for travelers and visitors alike.
