Karneshwar Mandir, Kasba Sangameshwar

The Karneshwar Temple at Kasba Sangameshwar, just 3 km off the Mumbai–Goa highway, is one of the most remarkable and historic temples in the Konkan region. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is not only a sacred place of worship but also an extraordinary example of ancient stone architecture and sculpture in Maharashtra.

Spread across nearly 400 sq. meters of stone-paved courtyard, the temple stands on a high plinth with a circumambulatory path. The eastern entrance leads to a mukhmandap (porch), a beautifully sculpted space with stone benches, intricate ceiling work, and a circular stone dome with a finely carved chandelier-like design—one of the rarest in Konkan. The Navarang Mandap (nine-part pillared hall) that follows is adorned with ornate pillars and sculpted brackets. Unlike most temples where mythological Yaksha figures support the beams, here we find carvings of deities like Ganesha, Narasimha, and Veena-dhara Gandharva holding the architectural load—a feature truly unique to this temple.

The sanctum houses a Shivalinga, while niches in the hall feature idols of Saraswati, Vishnu with Sheshnag, and Brahma. Outside, small shrines of Surya, Ganesha, and other deities add to the sacred aura. The Sun Temple within the premises is particularly captivating, with a seven-horsed chariot sculpture and zodiac carvings around the deity.

One of the most striking features of Karneshwar Temple is the Makarmukh (crocodile-shaped water spout) through which abhishek water flows out. This ancient design represents Ganga emerging through a crocodile’s mouth, a rare element in later temple constructions where gomukh became more common.

The temple’s inscriptions record land grants and donations, reflecting its importance during medieval times. Poet Shesha, court poet of King Karna, has vividly described Sangameshwar and the significance of this temple in his work Sangameshwar Mahatmya. Historical references suggest that the temple enjoyed patronage from nearby villages such as Dhampur, Shivne, Dhamani, Lovale, and Tivre, ensuring its upkeep for centuries.

With its blend of spirituality, intricate stone artistry, and unique architectural features, Karneshwar Temple is not only a place of worship but also a treasure of Konkan’s cultural and historical heritage.
