About the place ...
Situated in Gondavale village on the banks of the Manganga River, the Gondavlekar Maharaj Temple is a sacred pilgrimage site dedicated to Shri Brahmachaitanya Gondavalekar Maharaj—one of Maharashtra’s greatest saints and spiritual reformers. Born as Ganapati Ravji Ghugardare in 1845, Maharaj dedicated his life to spreading the simple yet profound path of Ram Naam (devotion to Lord Ram) and uplifting the masses through acts of compassion, spiritual guidance, and social service
The temple complex grew around Maharaj’s samadhi (final resting place), where he attained eternal peace in 1913. Originally, Maharaj had transformed his own home into a Ram Mandir, then expanded the site to include temples of Datta and Shani, meditation halls, and vast facilities for visiting disciples and pilgrims. The mandir itself was constructed in 1936–37, featuring a spacious prayer hall and sanctum with a Gopal Krishna idol above, and Maharaj’s samadhi in the basement below. The sanctum is adorned with images of Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman, and is continually filled with the soothing chant “Shriram Jayaram Jayjay Ram”—echoed by hundreds at daily aarti and kirtan
Gondavalekar Maharaj was known for his tireless outreach—establishing over twenty-five Ram temples across India, opening his granary during famines, providing jobs and free meals to locals, and showing great compassion for animals by rescuing countless cows from slaughter. His teachings inspired thousands to lead virtuous and spiritually conscious lives, and the temple remains a beacon of solace and faith
The expansive complex houses Shri Maharaj’s mother’s resting place, a large Tulsi Vrindavan, a cowshed with multiple river-named breeds, and robust accommodation for devotees—making it possible to welcome thousands, especially on Thursdays and full moon days, when free prasad is served to all. Other important shrines nearby include Thorle Ram Mandir and Hanuman Mandir, with historic links to Maharaj’s spiritual quest and India’s freedom movement
Darshan hours run from 4:30am to 10:00pm, with a constant flow of devotees attending aarti sessions, bhajan gatherings, and meditation under Maharaj’s enduring spiritual presence
