This west-facing temple, built around the 12th century CE, is a superb representative of Chalukyan and Hemadpanthi traditions. The temple is uniquely set so that natural lattice-cut stone walls cool the interior and let in filtered sunlight even in the peak of summer—an ingenious feature.

Three entrances—west, north, and south—give easy access to the sabhamandap (assembly hall), vestibule, and sanctum. Every pillar displays intricate decorative bands: the lower panels depict rows of elephants, tigers, and combat scenes from the Ramayana. Above these, lifelike carvings of Vali and Sugriva, celestial maidens, and deities in musical poses demonstrate rare precision and artistic mastery. The outer walls feature reliefs of Vishnu (in varied avatars), Shiva, Krishna, Radha, Surya, and the Ashtadikpalas (guardians of the directions)

The vestibule’s entry is adorned with flautists, drummers, animals, flower scrolls, and a stone rangoli design on the threshold—a motif echoed in the neighboring Baleshwar Temple. The sanctum, on a lower level than the mandap, is purposely left empty, symbolizing a focus on divine light rather than an idol. During the Kiranotsav, sunlight travels directly to the heart of the sanctum for three days, a rare phenomenon attracting historians and photographers for its architectural precision.

Adjacent temples—Baleshwar, Rameshwar, and Mallikarjun—share similar layouts and artistry, featuring stone dance floors and remarkable sculptural programs. Together, these temples bear witness to the artistic, spiritual, and historical richness of Pedgaon, especially as the fort was once a key Maratha stronghold and the site of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s martyrdom
