Set deep in the forested Sahyadri hills near Badlapur, Kondeshwar Temple is one of Maharashtra’s most enchanting ancient Shiva shrines. Revered as a jagrut devasthan (spiritually awakened site), it lies at the confluence of two rivers and is famed both for its spiritual ambiance and its natural beauty—particularly the nearby Kondeshwar waterfall, a monsoon haven for trekkers and pilgrims alike

Traditionally, the temple’s origins are linked to the Pandavas, with local legend stating they resided and worshipped here during their exile. Carved into black stone in the classic Hemadpanthi architectural style, the main cave shrine and sanctum showcase intricate rockwork and serene artistry. The temple has survived centuries as a spiritual focal point, maintained in more recent decades by the revered Avdhoot Niranjangiri Maharaj (Kondeshwar Baba), whose presence imbues the site with a sense of living tradition

A short walkway leads visitors from the entrance through lush forest to the main temple, passing several smaller Shiva lingams, a Nandi idol, and other shrines. The main shrine’s spacious hall offers shelter and seating, with idols of Ganesha, Vitthal-Rakhumai, Hanuman, Dattatreya, and Durga Devi present. Behind the sanctum, images of Kondeshwar Baba serve as reminders of the site’s recent spiritual caretakers.

The garbhagriha itself is carved entirely from black stone, housing a self-manifested Swayambhu Shiva lingam beneath a serpent hood. Water trickles perpetually from above the lingam for abhishek, maintaining a mystical atmosphere. A stone Nandi stands at the sanctum’s entrance, while behind, Ganesha and Parvati idols complete the array of deities. Nearby, the site’s natural features—ponds formed from ancient waterfall erosion, forested cliffs, and caves—provide further layers of spiritual and natural interest

During Shravan Mondays and Maha Shivratri, the temple hosts special rituals, bhajans, pravachans, and Haripath readings. Free khichdi prasad is distributed, and monsoon months see a surge of visitors drawn by the spectacular Kondeshwar waterfall and forest scenery. Unique among regional temples, Kondeshwar does not accept monetary donations, upholding a centuries-old tradition of humility and service.

The temple remains open daily from 6 AM to 8:30 PM and is accessible via paved walkways and stairs, with barricated ponds ensuring safety during the rainy season
