About the place ...
Bhavani Devi is worshipped as the protective goddess of Shivaji Maharaj, with legends linking her blessings to critical victories such as the encounter with Afzal Khan at Pratapgad. The royal cry “Jai Bhavani” became a symbol of Maratha valor, and the silver handprint of Shivaji Maharaj displayed here is ritually honored daily, reflecting the dynasty’s intimate bond with this temple.
The current Bhavani Mandap structure was commissioned in 1908 by Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, replacing the original 1770 palace building. It stands as a stunning example of Maratha architecture, featuring two-storey galleries, a large stone-pillared courtyard, intricately carved wooden arches, and well-preserved relics of Kolhapur’s royal era. The sanctum (Amba Devghar) contains the idol of Tulja Bhavani Devi seated on a silver-adorned Vajrapitha. Daily worship is performed alongside other family deities: Ganesh, Khandoba, Krishna, Shivaji Maharaj, Ram Panchayatana, and Mahishasura Mardini.
Prominently, the silver palm impression of Shivaji Maharaj is said to have been modeled from the lime imprint taken after the construction of Sindhudurg Fort, commemorated and venerated as a sign of royal blessing. A life-size wooden statue of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj stands nearby, and taxidermy specimens recall Kolhapur’s hunting tradition.
The nearby Krida Stambha (sports column) and historic Nagarkhana (gate tower) frame the temple in a lively precinct hosting daily rituals and processions. Mythic lore adds a touch of mystery, with stories of ancient tunnels linking the palace to Panhala Fort
