Rankbhairav Temple, Kolhapur

Before Mahalaxmi Temple’s 8th-century establishment, the area was dotted with six inhabited pockets. The region’s stones—used by the Shilahara dynasty under King Gandaraditya to build the temple—were quarried here, and after a powerful earthquake, this quarry transformed into Rankala Lake. Legend claims a golden temple dedicated to Rankbhairav lies beneath its waters.

According to local lore, Rankbhairav is one of eight Bhairavs appointed by Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) to protect Kolhapur’s water supplies during a catastrophic drought, earning him the designation “Kshetrapal” or guardian of Rankala. The temple itself presides over a peaceful courtyard entered via an elaborate archway, with ornamental lamp towers (deep-malas), tulsi shrines, and memorials of the Jadhav family—historic custodians who served Kolhapur’s Chhatrapatis and whose mausoleums stand within the complex.

Architecturally, the temple rises on a high plinth and features a mandapa with square, octagonal, and round Chalukyan-style stone columns decorated with foliage and geometric patterns. The sanctum’s doorway exhibits brass embellishments and a Ganesh idol above, leading to the main idol of Rankbhairav: a standing stone figure in a Maratha turban, haloed by a five-hooded serpent. The temple also hosts a brass horse-mounted Kalabhairav, subsidiary shrines to Vitthal-Rukmini, and a Digambar Jain shrine dedicated to Neminath

The courtyard’s deep-malas and tulsi plants add to the site’s spiritual beauty, while worship rituals continue daily for all communities. The temple remains a vital center of faith for the city’s many local castes and for devotees seeking water and prosperity
