Dighi is 40 km from Pachora, 23 km from Chalisgaon, with ST bus service available from both towns. Private vehicles can park directly at the temple premises. Pathways and steps are accessible and well-maintained; difficulty is easy, suited for all ages
The temple’s splendor can be best appreciated during Navratri (September-October), when devotees from surrounding villages gather for the annual fair and spiritual celebrations. For quiet exploration, October to March is recommended during cooler months
About the place ...
Built atop a ten-foot-high stone platform, the Devi Temple is approached by a flight of 8–10 steps and graced by a deepa-stambh (lamp tower) facing the ornate main entrance. The layout features a semi-open Mukhamandap (porch) with carved stone seats, an enclosed Sabhamandap (assembly hall), and a richly-decorated Garbhagriha (sanctum). The exterior walls are adorned with human and animal sculptures, angelic brackets, and musicians playing instruments
Within the Sabhamandap lie a broken Vishnu image (once the presiding deity), a red-ochre Ganesh idol, and numerous wall carvings of gods and attendants. The ceiling, formed from concentric stone circles, formerly supported four celestial maidens (sursundaris)—two remain, one dancing and the other playing mridanga (drum), while smaller yakshini figures hold musical instruments beneath them.
The sanctum doorway is ornamented with creeper and floral motifs, guarded by two relieved female figures. On the lintel sits Ganesh, with an architrave depicting dancers, wrestlers, and a spirited Hanuman scene. Inside, a grand stone idol of Mahishasuramardini, the eighteen-armed goddess, towers atop a tiger, holding weapons, crown, and ornate jewelry
Stone spires crown each section, with amalaka and kalash atop the sanctum. Despite centuries of exposure, most carvings are well-preserved, reflecting Hemadpanti methods of construction—large blocks fitted without mortar, echoing temple-building techniques of the legendary Bavli rajas and Yadava architects
The tranquil, paved courtyard is shaded by ancient trees. A nearby memorial honoring freedom fighter Mahadu Moti Ram Pardeshi, along with a Nandi, Shiva Lingam, and relief sculpture, preserves the village’s modern history alongside its ancient legacy
