About the place ...

Nestled among three lush hills in Turambav village, near Chiplun in Ratnagiri district, the Shree Sharada Devi Temple holds the distinction of being the only temple in the Konkan region dedicated to Goddess Sharada Devi — the divine embodiment of learning, wisdom, and arts. This sacred shrine, set beside the picturesque Kapashi River, is believed to bless childless couples with progeny and fulfill devotees’ wishes. Recognizing its spiritual and cultural significance, the Government of Maharashtra has declared it a Category C pilgrimage site.

Sharada Devi Temple is accessible via Wahal Phata near Savarde on the Mumbai–Goa Highway. The beautiful two‑storey marble structure, reconstructed about a decade ago at a cost of ₹1.5 crore, showcases exquisite Rajasthani architecture, blending artistic elegance with spiritual serenity. The serene location, framed by dense greenery and clear river waters, creates a divine atmosphere ideal for worship and contemplation.

The temple layout features a front porch (mukhamandap), a vast 45 × 34 ft open hall (sabhamandap), and an inner sanctum (garbhagriha) with intricate detailing. The marble flooring glows under natural light, while colorfully carved pillars support the airy structure. Inside, a magnificent statue of Goddess Sharada Devi, seated gracefully on a peacock and holding a veena, symbolizes knowledge and harmony. The sanctum also enshrines black‑stone idols of village deities Varadayini, Manai, and Chandika, with Sharada Devi at the center and an idol of Gauri, brought out only during Navratri. Above rises a dazzling spire (shikhar) adorned with miniature domes and golden finials, exuding regal charm.

The temple comes alive during the Navratri festival (Ashwin Shuddha Pratipada to Vijayadashami), drawing thousands of devotees from across Maharashtra. This period, regarded as the most auspicious for fulfilling vows (navas), transforms Turambav into a vibrant fairground. Devotees believe that Sharada Devi blesses childless couples with motherhood and ensures family prosperity. Festivities include folk dances like Jakhadi, community bhajans, kirtans, and the symbolic “oti bharne” (offering ritual). On the third night, a grand aarti and devotional performances continue until dawn. Families who have received the goddess’s blessings return in later years to express gratitude with their children.

On Vijayadashami, the temple celebrates the distinctive Golden Harvest Ritual, where families exchange seedlings and offer freshly sprouted grains (hurda) as thanks for prosperity. Festivals such as Shravan Shuddha Chaturdashi (Jagar Pournima), Diwali, Dev‑Diwali, and Shimga Festival are also celebrated with heartfelt devotion and community participation.

Managed by the Sharada Devi Temple Trust, the complex offers well‑maintained guesthouses and meal facilities, with the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation adding lodging and dining amenities to support pilgrim tourism. The temple remains open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., allowing visitors to spend tranquil hours in prayer, reflection, and scenic enjoyment of the river valley that surrounds this divine abode
