About the place ...

Sarasbagh Ganapati Temple, affectionately known as Talyaatil Ganapati (“Ganapati in the lake”), is one of Pune’s most cherished and historically significant landmarks. Its story begins in 1750 when Nanasaheb Peshwa, after building the Devdeveshwar Temple atop Parvati Hill, set about beautifying Pune’s landscape with a sprawling artificial lake (25 acres), featuring a central island where graceful cranes (saras) would gather. In 1784, Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built the Ganapati temple here, installing the right-trunked idol that would become a guardian deity for the Peshwa dynasty and, over centuries, generations of Punekars

The temple complex reflects traditional Peshwa architectural brilliance: red earthen pillars, grand arches, and a shikhar (spire) soaring 36 feet with 68 arches bearing bow-and-arrow and serpent motifs. As time passed, the lake was filled in, and today lush gardens and tranquil paved paths welcome visitors to a spiritual and cultural oasis in the heart of Pune. Precious pink marble and golden ceiling patterns grace the sanctum, while marble flooring and decorative archways evoke an air of serenity. Rituals and legend blend here—the Peshwas once held strategic discussions in boats on the lake, often accompanied by African or deaf-mute boatmen to ensure secrecy

The temple has evolved over the decades—restorations in 1842, 1969, and 1977 have expanded the halls, installed new marble idols (1990), and added the Ganapati Museum (1995), where 500+ Ganesha figures made from stone, metal, wood, ivory, and shell can be admired. A library, meditation hall, and garden areas offer space for learning and contemplation. Evening aartis, vows (navas), and festivals bring crowds for joy, devotion, and connection. Ganesh Chaturthi, especially, transforms Sarasbag into a hub of celebration, music, and devotion

The surrounding gardens and nearby Parvati Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, and Jain Shwetambar Temple complete the area’s spiritual circuit. PMPML bus and rickshaw access is excellent, with parking for private vehicles just outside
