Mahaganapati Temple at Ranjangaon is one of Maharashtra’s Ashtavinayak pilgrimage shrines, revered as the seat of Lord Ganesha in His mighty Mahaganapati form—a deity described in scriptures with 20 arms and 10 trunks, worshipped for the dispelling of obstacles and victory over evil. Founded between the 9th–10th centuries and expanded during the Peshwa era, the temple’s main gate faces east and features imposing stonework, grand pillars, a wooden sabhamandap (assembly hall), and ornate spire. Towering over the entrance, statues of Jay and Vijay guard the sanctum—a typical feature of Ashtavinayak temples that signal protection and welcome. The current sanctum houses a vermilion-smothered Ganesha with a left-turned trunk, broad forehead, and consorts Riddhi and Siddhi. Beneath this, in a hidden cellar, lies the ancient Mahaganapati idol, believed to have 20 arms and 10 trunks, placed there for safekeeping during historic invasions. Architectural and Astronomic marvels abound: the temple is constructed such that twice a year, sunlight shines directly on the deity as the sun transitions between Dakshinayan and Uttarayan (solstices), drawing devotees in for the divine spectacle. Peshwa Madhavrao personally undertook the construction of the inner sanctum and stone base, while Sardar Kibe from Indore later renovated the compound and sabhamandap. During Ganesh Chaturthi and festival seasons, the temple springs to life with music, aartis, and five days where devotees approach the idol for direct worship (pradakshina within the sanctum itself).
