About the place ...

Set in the historic village of Kurkumbh in Daund taluka, the Firangai Mata Temple is one of Maharashtra’s most significant Shakti Peethas and a revered center for spiritual seekers and devotees. The temple—believed to date back to the Pandavas and built in classic Hemadpanti stone style—sits atop a hill and is enclosed by a stone fort wall with majestic gateways and sculpted deepmalas. It is affectionately called “Aaisahib” by locals, and the goddess is celebrated as a wish-fulfilling protector whose legend links her to Tuljabhavani.heritagetemples+1

Local stories recount that Firangai Mata appeared before two devoted brothers, blessing their village and instructing them not to look back as they led her down the Kurkumbh plateau. When curiosity broke her command, she vanished at the spot where the original temple now stands. The name “Firangai” is said to come from the curved sword (“firang”) she wields. Historical records show major renovations by Sambhaji Raje Naik Nimbalkar in 1760, and modern conservation efforts continue today.pilgrimdata+1

The main hilltop temple features a large mahadvara (two-storey gateway) adorned with carvings of Ganesh, wrestlers, war scenes, elephants, gatekeepers, and mythological stories. The stone sabhamandap leads to the sanctum, where the finely carved Firangai idol is flanked by a lion. Side shrines include Kaalbhairavnath, Jogeshwari, and a Vitthal–Rukmini mandir. Restoration work in 2019 unearthed three ancient stones beneath the idol—Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati—with each stone engraved with three serpent figures, representing the goddess’s trigunatmika aspect.heritagetemples+1

A secondary village temple, over 300 years old, showcases architectural grandeur, beautiful carvings, and a fencing wall with grand gates on all sides. The temple features stone elephants near the entrance, a spacious mandap hall, and a recently restored shikhara (spire) with carvings of Vishnu’s incarnations and other deities.

The temple draws crowds during Navratri, Vaishakh Purnima, and monthly Purnima processions. Worship includes daily aartis, palanquin processions, Ashadhi Ekadashi dindi (pilgrim walk) to the Bhima river, and rituals believed to cure ailments. Devotees perform the jogava ritual (asking for sustenance) and paraḍī bharane (offerings), seeking boons, blessings, and healings from the goddess.
