About the place ...

Nestled amidst the serene beauty of Dhamapur village in Malvan taluka, the Bhagwati Temple is a harmonious blend of natural grace and spiritual radiance. Set beside the ancient Dhamapur Lake, this sacred shrine holds immense historical, architectural, and cultural importance in South Konkan. Dhamapur’s scenic charm—with its lush hills, coconut and betel nut groves, and mirror-like waters—has long inspired pilgrims, writers, and nature lovers alike.

Local tradition records that in 1530 CE, Nagesh Naik, an officer under the Vijayanagara Empire, constructed both the temple and the lake. The lake, considered a UNESCO World Heritage irrigation site, continues to sustain the region through its evergreen waters—believed to stay full even during severe droughts. The goddess Bhagwati is regarded as the divine protector of Dhamapur and the guardian of this sacred lake.

The architecture of the Bhagwati Temple is a testament to traditional Konkani craftsmanship. Visitors ascend steps through a forest trail, passing the smaller Sateri Temple and Tulsi Vrindavan before reaching the main complex. The temple comprises a Sabhamandap (main hall), Upa-Sabhamandap (auxiliary hall), Antaral (inner hall), and Garbha Griha (sanctum). The high-roofed main hall features twelve large wooden pillars, with inscriptions dating its renovation to Shaka 1827 (1904 CE) by craftsman Dhondi Vishram Thavi. The wooden doorway of the inner hall is ornately carved with floral motifs, lions, Hanuman, Garuda, and Ganesha beneath a magnificent Kirttimukh symbol.

At the heart of the sanctum resides the black stone idol of Goddess Bhagwati, depicted in four-armed form, accompanied by Lord Ganesha on the right and Lord Shiva on the left. Notably, the temple’s spire stands above the main hall—a rare architectural feature. Inside, ancient paintings of deities enrich the walls, adding to the temple’s mystique.

Behind the temple lies the pristine Dhamapur Lake, bordered by stone steps (ghat). Local legends say devotees once borrowed ornaments or utensils from the goddess for weddings by leaving floral offerings in baskets on the lake; they were granted and later returned. When trust was broken, the goddess withdrew this miraculous blessing, symbolizing divine justice and reverence.

The temple complex also includes shrines of Narayan and Brahman Dev. Major festivals such as Navratri, Ram Navami, and Hanuman Jayanti are celebrated with religious fervor. During Chaitra Navratri, nightly kirtans, sacred homa ceremonies, and the Bhagwati Palanquin Procession fill the village with devotion. On Dashhera, the nearby Bhavai Devi Temple hosts a symbolic wedding ritual of Shiva and Shakti.

Beyond spirituality, the adjoining Dhamapur Lake is a marvel of medieval engineering, with an earthen dam 11.43 meters high and 271 meters long, irrigating over 125 acres. The surrounding forests support more than 125 bird species and rare flora, drawing researchers and nature enthusiasts. Remarkably, in 2023, ancient petroglyphs—prehistoric rock carvings of animals and geometric figures—were discovered in the nearby plateau, revealing the area’s early human heritage
