Rasalgad Fort

Rasalgad Fort, situated in Khed Taluka of Ratnagiri district, is a hidden gem of the Western Ghats, offering a perfect blend of historical richness, scenic landscapes, and light trekking. Located at an altitude of about 1770 feet, Rasalgad is ideal for amateur trekkers and history enthusiasts who wish to explore Maharashtra’s lesser-known forts.

Historically, Rasalgad was under the control of the More dynasty before it was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later fortified under Maratha rule. Although relatively small compared to other forts, Rasalgad is well-maintained and houses fortification walls, water cisterns, rock-cut steps, and two Maruti (Hanuman) temples. The fort is also famous for its Veergal (hero stones) and the Sati memorial stones which reflect its historical and cultural significance.

One of the highlights of Rasalgad is the panoramic view of surrounding valleys and neighboring forts like Suamargad and Mahipatgad. It forms part of a famous fort-triangle trek along with these two. At the top, the calm breeze and open views of the Konkan landscape are rejuvenating. The main gate, bastions, and inscriptions are well-preserved and make it a visual delight for heritage photographers and explorers.

The trek to Rasalgad is simple and takes around 30–45 minutes from the base village Rasalwadi, making it suitable even for families and beginner trekkers. The route is shaded with trees and rich in biodiversity, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.
