About the place ...

In the historic coastal village of Achra, known for its thousand-year-old legacy and unique cultural traditions, stands the revered Rameshwar Temple. This shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva yet celebrates both Shaiva and Vaishnav traditions, symbolizing the unity of Hari and Har. According to local belief, Lord Rameshwar of Achra is the brother of Lord Kunakeshwar of Devgad.

The temple’s origins date back to 1684, as noted on an ancient stone inscription in its sanctum. In 1720, Chhatrapati Sambhaji of Kolhapur granted Achra village as inam (royal endowment) to the temple, earning it the title “Inamdar Shri Dev Rameshwar Temple.” Its festive customs still echo the grandeur of princely tradition, with celebrations blending Shaiva devotion and Vaishnav ceremonial styles.

Architecturally, the temple follows Konkani style, resembling an old mansion with courtyards, side shrines, and intricate lamp towers. Visitors enter through a three-story gateway, passing the shrine of Ganesha, into a courtyard adorned with ancient Deepastambhas and carved stone towers depicting elephants, vyalas, birds, and oil lamps. Inside, the Sabhamandap (assembly hall) features wooden pillars linked by arches, leading to the Antaral guarded by colorful statues of Vishnu’s gatekeepers Jaya and Vijaya. Intricate carvings of deities like Krishna, Lakshmi, Garuda, Panchanana Shiva, and Nandi adorn the pillars, reflecting a harmonious spiritual blend.

A marble Nandi idol stands before the sanctum, which houses a beautiful Shivalinga with a silver-plated mask of Rameshwar, backed by a five-hooded serpent in sacred Panchdhatu metal. Daily rituals include morning and noon worship, Kaul (divine guidance), evening Maha Pooja, and Aarti.

Major festivals include Ram Navami, celebrated with the arrival of Shri Ram’s idol from the Kanvinde family, nine days of prayers, and Maha Prasad. Kartik Utsav brings nightly Palkhi processions and cultural programs, culminating in a grand full moon celebration. Musical greats such as Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, Devaki Pandit, and Kumar Gandharva have performed here during the temple’s renowned Sangeetik Mahotsav.

Achra is also famous for the Gaav Paḷan ritual every five years, where villagers vacate the area for three days while Lord Rameshwar “cleanses” the village of negative energies—a tradition born from ancient legend
