About the place ...

Raireshwar Temple is an iconic site of faith and history, perched atop the Raireshwar Plateau in the Sahyadris, 1,433 meters above sea level and 30 km from Bhor. Revered as the birthplace of Maratha Swarajya, this is where 16-year-old Shivaji Maharaj took the historic oath of independence (Hindavi Swarajya) in 1645 CE, consecrating the pledge with his own blood alongside 12 loyal followers. Ancient records and memorials here preserve the spirit and heroism of this moment—now central to Maharashtra’s cultural identity

The plateau is framed by majestic hills and panoramic vistas. During monsoon, the plateau transforms into a sea of wild yellow Smithia flowers, while the unique seven-colored soil fascinates both botanists and trekkers. Access from the base village is a scenic, moderate 30-minute hike up stone steps and iron ladders, now complemented by paved walking paths. The fort’s setting lures trekkers, history enthusiasts, and landscape photographers

The Raireshwar temple, east-facing and hemadpanthi-chalukyan in architecture, features a robust stone fort wall, veranda, pillared hall, and sanctum set two feet below ground. The sanctum houses a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva lingam, flanked by two Nandi statues and ancient inscriptions. The walls display Shivaji’s legendary oath scene, shields, swords, and documented renovations spanning 200+ years. Outside, a memorial statue of Shivaji and companions greets visitors alongside a lime-grinding wheel and natural freshwater spring.

Festival Highlights: Shivrajyabhishek Day in June, Panchami after Gudi Padwa fair, and Saptami “Shapath Din” oath day are marked by processions, Rudrabhishek, cultural events, and fairs drawing statewide crowds. The site also offers tent/home stay experiences with local villagers—ideal for weekend getaways and monsoon treks
