About the place ...

Nestled in the naturally blessed Konkan region, the village of Koldhe in Lanja Taluka, Ratnagiri District, is a place where history, spirituality, and nature beautifully unite. Koldhe is renowned not only for its scenic landscape filled with coconut, mango, cashew, and jackfruit trees but also for being the birthplace of the ancestors of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and Acharya Kakasaheb Tambe, the great reformer. Among its many treasures, the ancient Mallikarjun Temple, dating back to the 14th century, stands as the spiritual and architectural heart of the village.

According to legend, this temple emerged from a divine revelation. In ancient times, the place was a dense forest where a cow from a local Brahmin named Tambe’s herd would daily shed milk over a stone. Curious about the miracle, a herdsman named Rewal followed the cow and discovered a naturally formed Shivlinga at that spot. Upon learning of this divine sign, the villagers, led by the Tambe family, constructed a temple dedicated to Lord Mallikarjun (Shiva). The carvings on the temple’s wooden pillars are believed to depict scenes from this legend.

The temple’s architecture is a remarkable example of Hemadpanthi style, built entirely from laterite (jambha) stone without any cement. Its design includes a sabhamandap (assembly hall), antaral (inner hall), and garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The intricate wooden entrance is beautifully carved, while the sanctum houses a black stone Shivlinga, distinct from the reddish stones found elsewhere. Within the sanctum lies a stone Nandi and a brass mask of Lord Shiva with a serpent hood. The surrounding courtyard features four traditional Deepmalas (lamp towers), lit during Tripurari Pournima, creating a mesmerizing sight.

Every year, the Maha Shivaratri festival draws thousands of devotees from across the region. The grand celebration includes a silver-masked procession of Lord Mallikarjun’s palanquin, devotional singing, and the traditional Bhovtya dance, a vibrant form of Kokan folk expression. Besides Maha Shivaratri, Mondays in Shravan and Kartik months also attract large numbers of worshippers.

Koldhe’s deep cultural roots connect it to Rani Lakshmibai’s family, who once made generous donations to local temples. The nearby shrines of Mahalaxmi, Adityanarayan, and Laxmikant further enhance the village’s spiritual significance
